Blackout Blinds

Blackout blinds are the perfect answer for many people in the problems they face with light entering different rooms of their house or unit in circumstances where they need darkness. For instance, have you ever been in a situation where you finally got to bed at around four am in the morning and only two or three hours later the sun rose and came streaming in through your curtains. Or have you ever been in the situation where you have been in your home theatre room trying to watch the latest DVD movie and all you can see is the reflection on the plasma screen of the light coming in through and surrounding your blinds. These are just two of the situations that people face where blackout blinds are required. Others include the nursery where daylight entering the window can make getting baby to sleep a greater chore than it already is. Even the bathroom or any other room where you require privacy at night is a candidate for a blackout blind. The reason in this situation is that any window covering that lets in the light during the daytime will let out light during the nighttime. This means that someone standing outside the window at night will be able to see what’s going on inside through the window covering. Hence having blackout window blinds is the perfect answer for this situation.

Blackout Blinds - What They Are

You may have gathered by now that a black out blind is a special type of blind that stops light passing through, whether it be sunlight during the daytime or globe light during the nighttime. These are sometimes called room darkening blinds but it needs to be pointed out that blackout window blinds don’t just darken a room, they cut out 99% of the light entering or leaving the room. Whereas room darkening blinds only filter the amount of light entering or leaving. Black-out blinds can be made from a variety of materials depending on what type of blind is being used. For example, blackout roller blinds or roman blinds are made of a blackout material. This usually has some form of plastic or pvc incorporated into the blind along with an ultra violet treatment. The material itself is quite thick and heavy to help naturally reduce the amount of light passing through.

Blackout Blind Alternatives

Although blackout blinds are a great choice, blackout shades and blackout drapes or blackout curtains are also available. These too are generally manufactured with a heavier material, but also have what is called a blackout liner attached to them. Blackout curtains therefore have a blackout curtain liner that has the same properties as the blackout blinds mentioned above. Even woven wood shades that are preferred by those looking for a more earthy and natural look, can have a blackout liner attached to create a completely dark room. By having the choice between blackout blinds, black out shades, black out drapes and black out curtains, just about any interior design can be catered to. Each of these also has a range of colours, patterns and textures adding to the full range of choices that may be necessary to match your particular décor or in those situations when you are creating a completely new interior theme.

Other Considerations

Keep in mind when looking at blackout blinds that the blackout property of the blind only applies to the light that is blocked from passing through the blind. If you want complete darkness in the room where the blind is being attached, you will need to take into consideration the light that is coming into the room from around the edges of the blind. For example, if the blackout blind were to be installed within the window recess, then there will probably be less than an inch between the window glass and the edge of the blackout blind. Because this space is so small, the light will easily travel around the edge of the blackout blind. There are a number of ways this light can be eliminated. One of the easiest is to install the blind outside the window recess so that several inches of each side of the blind sit on the wall surrounding the window. Alternatively, you can use the type of design that plantation shutters have, that are themselves installed within a frame so that no place for the light to get in around the edges. It also necessary to remember that light can come in over the top of the blind and once again the easiest solution is to create a lip coming down from the top of the window recess and install the blackout blind behind this.

Purchasing Blackout Blinds

Many people look for cheap blackout blinds when looking to purchase. Because of the huge range of types, sizes, materials, colours and patterns, the best bet is to give a blackout blind manufacturer or retailer a call and get a free quote based on your specific requirements. Even just looking online, it can be seen that many retailers give specials of up to 70% off their blinds. Either way, purchasing a blackout blind is a great investment if you are in need of a light free room.

Thanks for the helpful article. I have a question for you: I have just installed a blackout roller shade. As you suggested, I installed it "outside the window recess so that several inches of each side of the blind sit on the wall surrounding the window." However, light is still creeping through the sides and top of the shade. You also suggest "that light can come in over the top of the blind and once again the easiest solution is to create a lip coming down from the top of the window recess and install the blackout blind behind this." I imagine I could also create lips that cover the sides of the shade. My question is: Where can I buy these "lips" so that I can install them myself? Do pre-made lips exist, or would they have to be custom-made? If they exist, where can I find them? If they have to be custom-made, who can make them for me (I'm on a very tight budget)? If you don't know where I can find them, could you at least suggest where I might look, and whether there are any search terms that might work ("blackout lip shade light" isn't coming up with anything other than this page and lipstick)? Thanks!

Hi

I'm having the same problem, did you ever find out where you can buy the "lip" that can block out the rest of the light? Thanks
